Buffalo Niagara International Airport Celebrates 100 Years of Aviation Excellence
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) celebrated the 100th anniversary of Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) on September 25, bringing together airport officials, the Niagara Aerospace Museum, and the Aero Club of Buffalo to mark a century of service to Western New York.
Airport officials also unveiled commemorative items that will be placed in a new time capsule, preserving the airport’s story for future generations to discover in 50 years.
Originally opened as Buffalo Municipal Airport on September 25, 1926, BUF is among the oldest public airports in the United States. Today, it remains a vital transportation hub, connecting Western New York residents, visitors and businesses while supporting the region’s economy and aviation industry.
“The 100th anniversary of Buffalo Niagara International Airport is an opportunity to celebrate where we’ve been while looking ahead to the future of aviation in Western New York,” said NFTA Director of Aviation Johanne Jayaratne. “BUF has played an important role in connecting our community to the world, and we look forward to building on that legacy for generations to come.”
The celebration was held outside Satterfield’s, the airport’s newest pre-security restaurant and gathering space. The venue is named after John M. Satterfield, a visionary aviation pioneer widely regarded as the father of the airport.
